Regifting: The Pros and Cons

No matter how much – or how little – thought someone puts into a gift, sometimes it’s just not right for you. We’ve all been there, finding ourselves on the receiving end of gifts we know we’ll just never get round to using, like yet another bath giftset or a book you’ve already read. No matter what the reason is, you don’t want it to just sit at the back of your cupboard gathering dust.

With regifting, you can give the gift to someone who you feel would like it AND you get to save money in the process (win, win right?). We’re looking at some of the pros, the cons and some useful tips on the art of regifting:

Pros

  • The gift will go to someone who will enjoy it or get better use out of it.
  • You avoid wasting a perfectly good gift
  • It’s an affordable gifting option and you’ll end up saving money
  • You can avoid the clutter caused by a build-up of unused gifts

Cons

  • You’re probably going to feel a bit guilty
  • You have to be careful to avoid insulting anyone or hurting their feelings

Useful tips for regifting

To help avoid hurt feelings there are a few things to remember in order to regift with a conscience, the most important being that you should never regift the item within the same circle as you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. It is also important to always add a personal touch to your regifted gift, which you can do by adding an extra something thoughtful to the gift, such as candles and a facemask to go with the bath set for a self-care session, or a bookmark and a good bottle of wine to go with the book. That way the person receiving the gift can see you’ve put in extra thought and effort to make sure they enjoy their gift.
