Plant care in Winter

Winter has arrive and that means it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to care for your plants and make sure they survive the chill. Luckily, the cold weather does not have to spell the end for your plants, there are plenty of ways to give them a helping hand to make sure they’re ready for spring. Did you know that tending to plants reduces stress, makes you happier and increases productivity? We have put together some tips on how to care for your garden and indoor plants during the winter season:

Start with some garden maintenance

When winter comes around it’s important to do some general garden maintenance, from weeding, to pulling up dead plants and removing any leaves that may have gathered in your garden during winter. This will ensure your garden looks neat and help you avoid any decay and the pests that come with it.

Do some pruning

Many garden plants and flowers will be dormant during winter, making it the perfect time to do some pruning to encourage new growth in spring and summer. It’s important to first double check which plants need pruning, as well as how to correctly prune them, to make sure you don’t accidentally damage or kill them.

Add a layer of mulch to your garden

In order to ensure that your plants survive and prevent them from getting damaged by frost, try adding a layer of mulch to insulate your flower beds. Mulch is great for conserving soil moisture, maintaining soil health and reducing weed growth.

Cover your flower bed

If your garden is plagued by winter frost that has damaged your plants in previous years, you can cover your flowerbeds with sheets of plastic or material or plastic when frost is predicted, to prevent damage. Just remember that you will need to remove the material first thing the following morning.

Don’t forget your houseplants

Your houseplants will need some extra care during winter too. In fact, they need less water during the cold months so you will need to adjust your watering schedule. Plus, if you live in a drier region you may need to bump up the humidity in your home with a humidifier, if you have plants that thrive in humid conditions.
